Icelandic trio The Vintage Caravan kick off 2014 with a healthy dose of bluesy 70′s rock, and aside from looking way younger and less-hairy than expected, this band sound surprisingly weathered for a group that are just releasing their début.

Opening track Craving sets the tone for this 9 track album and its filled to the brim with classic rock infused riffs. The funky rhythm on this track provides plenty of head nodding opportunities for the listener and the catchy-chorus is a welcome one. The production has a hint of retro about it, but not too much. The guitars are grizzly but clear and the drums are punchy enough to drive the tracks forward. The vocal sound is ever so slightly fuzzy and produced in a way that reminds me of those classic 70′s rock bands, but it really works well with the rest of the production on Voyage. Let Me Be has plenty of backbone like its predecessor, but with a few more structural ideas than before. The band mixes it up with some elegant tempo changes and the vintage sounding solos really keep things sounding authentic.

Do You Remember has that classic ballad feel to it and it really blends into the album perfectly; it was one of the lighter tracks but ended up being one of my favourites on Voyage. If I didnt know this track was released in 2014, Id have sworn it was released in the 1970′s. Its perfectly followed up by the stomping riffs on Expand Your Mind and once again TVC deliver a really tight performance.

This album has plenty to shout about when it comes to classic rock goodness, but their mellower side is really something too and Winterland is a great example of this, its atmospheric, dreamy, psychedelic and trippy. Vocalist Óskar Logi Ágústsson pulls of a great performance and his tone reminds me of the haunting vocals of Loic Rossetti from German band The Ocean at times. Being a massive fan of The Ocean I welcomed this similarity happily.

The Vintage Caravan saved the best for last with closer The Kings Voyage. The bluesy riffs on this one are soaked in awesome sauce and at 2 minutes 24 they kick into one of the best grooves on the album, it undeniably will have you smiling from ear to ear.

There are plenty of retro-rock bands on the scene at the moment but many just come off as a cheap imitation. The Vintage Caravan not only do this genre justice, but they nail it to the wall. The riffs are tight and there is enough variety on Voyage to keep the most enthusiastic of fans contented throughout. If you like your riffs soaked in vintage bluesy rock then this album is for you.
