Recalling the stories that made the headlines in the Ireland of the 80s, Reeling in the 80s combines the decades biggest musical hits with the most memorable moments from news, sport, popular culture and entertainment. The double-DVD will allow viewers of the hugely popular RTÉ series the chance to enjoy again and again key moments from the top-rating programme.
Reeling in the Years first aired on RTÉ Television in 1999. So far the series has covered the 70s, 80s and 90s and remains a hugely popular part of the RTÉ schedule, drawing large audiences each time the series is aired.
Reeling in the 80s
The DVD, co-published with EMI, is the culmination of years of painstaking work required to prepare this complex and multi-faceted series for a commercial release. Says John ORegan, series producer: From the first transmission of the series in 1999, it was obvious enough that there might be interest in releasing a VHS/DVD version of the programme. We have looked at the feasibility of such a release over the years and now, in partnership with EMI, a release is finally possible. This DVD has all the key moments: the various stages of U2 through the 1980s; Jack Charlton and Euro 88; Stephen Roche in the Tour de France; Johnny Logan winning Eurovision twice. And theres all the major international news stories like Chernobyl, the Ethiopian famine of 1984-85, and the collapse of Communism in 1989.
Says Clare Duignan, RTÉs Director of Programmes: This is a timely and most welcome release of what has been one of RTÉs most perennially popular home-productions. With the assistance of RTEs Archives and Libraries as well as a range of other individuals and companies, fans of the series will now have the chance to own it themselves for posterity.
The DVD is as much a musical tour of the 80s as it is a review of the key events of the decade, and the diverse soundtrack features from international acts like Eurhythmics, Simple Minds, Talking Heads, The Clash, Blondie, New Order, Madness, Kylie Minogue and Human League, along with performances from Irish artists like Phil Lynott, Boomtown Rats, Big Tom, Dana and Daniel ODonnell, U2, The Blades, The Fureys and Davey Arthur, Paul Brady, Aslan, Feargal Sharkey and Sinead OConnor.
Reeling in the 90s

In one week this year, no less than four Reeling In The Years programmes featured in the Top Ten viewer ratings charts.Reeling in the 90s is a 170-minute double-disc DVD showcasing the highs and lows of a time when selling condoms was banned in Dublin shops, and when Ireland seemed to win the Eurovision nearly every year: when Jack Charlton led Ireland to the World Cup Finals at Italia 90 and USA 94: when Northern Ireland moved slowly from conflict to uneasy peace: when the linedancing craze swept the country and when mobile phones were an elusive, exclusive accessory. The 1990s also saw war in Iraq and the siege of Sarajevo: freedom for Nelson Mandela and the release of the Birmingham Six: the controversial Olympic victories of Irish swimmer Michelle Smith: the shock revelations of Ben Dunnes payments to politicians and the Bishop Eamon Casey scandal: the beginning of Boyzone and the end of The Irish Press. The DVD soundtrack features music from international acts like The Spice Girls, Blur, Kylie Minogue, Take That, Fat Boy Slim, Bobby Brown, All Saints, Jay-Z, The Sterophonics and Crowded House, along with performances from Irish artists such as U2, Westlife, Daniel ODonnell, Sinead OConnor, The Frank And Walters, A House, Richie Kavanagh, The Corrs, B*witched and The Cranberries. From The Spice Girls to Sonia OSullivanFrom Bill Clinton to BoyzoneFrom Riverdance to the Rainbow CoalitionFrom Italia 90 to USA 94From The Corrs to The CranberriesFrom U2s The Fly to the Millennium BugFrom The Spice Girls to Sonia OSullivanFrom Drumcree to Daniel ODonnellFrom Michael Carruth to Mary RobinsonFrom A House to Jay-Z
