Her Royal Harness came together as a synth-pop duo in 2012. Norwegian lead singer and songwriter Helene Jaeger joined with London producer Dylan Long to create what they describe as romantic battle hymns and quixotic laptop rock. In simpler terms, The Hunting Room is an album of dark alternative pop. After several plays many listeners will find themselves drawn into this album, despite its odd sullen sparseness the record is very good in places. Unfortunately, some very good music of this style often has a hard time finding a fan-base or airplay.

Throughout the album, Long and Jaeger mostly employ tribal drum beats, rocking guitar riffs, and pulsating synths as their overall sonic aesthetic. Closer listens reveal the details of a gothic song-writing style and Baroque-esque arrangements. Theres also fractured 80s influence, and a clear disregard towards being too easily ear-friendly. With nine tracks, the record is wisely only 35 minutes long. Too much more of this particular style could become grating.

The first real highlight is the shadowy and lashing Blood + Fire. With its airy yet blistering production, the song sounds as if it lifts in and out of itself. Its a satisfying listen because the sections of the song separate themselves and juxtapose each other in an interesting way, yet its rooted in appealing vocal melodies. One of the other more engaging songs is the first single called Unseen. The chorus is a hypnotic rhythm of Jaeger repeating thats the sound of the machine / thats the sound of the unseen / thats the sound of my dreams / come tumble down come tumble down come tumble down. The song also has some really interesting production nuances like an underlying 15-second soundbite of bubbling trumpets, and an even shorter surge of strings that burst out of a silent break in the music. Jaegers voice at times recalls the dramatic flailing of Kate Bush, and at other times the anguished catharsis of Florence and the Machine.

The Hunting Room and musical stylings of Her Royal Harness are certainly not for everyone. But its definitely one of those albums worth checking out and giving some time if anything youve read here sounds like it may appeal to you. Despite the darkly experimental and often beguiling nature of this music, theres also a warm and intriguing quality, making it a more mature and interesting listen than a lot of material that has come out this year.
