Occult Delight, overall, relies on Philip Intile’s distinctive vocals and melodic jangles, to make the most of its melancholic impact. “Strangle the Shadows” comes slowly into focus, with reverbed, shadowy vocals that pair up nicely to kicking drums, and a cool bass line. “Grudges Crossed” oscillates between haunting menace and droning sadness with the line “could it be that we are victims of your unconditional love.”

“Thieving Babies’ Breath” picks up the pace with a soaring chorus, while “Severed Heads” is a hypnotic little tune that starts with bass being plucked to eerie atmosphere and becomes fully fleshed-out with some strumming from the electric guitar. “She, Untamed”, the first single released from the album, is notable mostly for its guitar riff towards the end of the track that is highly reminiscent to the one near the end of the Joy Division song “Shadowplay.” “Occult Desire” is a goth jangle that gets life breathed into it with the energetic fluidity of drums and bass that mix well together.

Some of the shorter tracks, clocking in at just under three minutes, are some of the more exciting ones such as “Dirty Dream #3”, “Baby Bunny”, and “Times’s Up.” “Dirty Dream #3” is a rock ‘n’ roll influenced song that stands out for its lack of deeply entrenched moodiness, although the heavy loudness of Intile’s crooning continue to weigh on the listener. “Baby Bunny”, a track that could have been from The Cure, moves softly along with lyrics that are joyously despondent: “baby bunny know that it’s true, I can’t help you if you cannot help yourself.” “Time’s Up” is a fast-paced clash that runs its course quickly and intensely.

As a follow-up effort to their debut LP Ghosts Emerging, Occult Delight is a strong and solid record. While Mode Moderne has certainly taken their influences and ran with them, it would certainly have been nice to have been surprised once in a while, especially given that the record is curated with tracks that transition so seamlessly one after the other. However, Occult Delight is an album that is definitely worth the listen, and Mode Moderne is a Vancouver talent to keep your eyes on.
