Nelson Freitas - Elevate (2014)
It's no secret that the music career of Nelson Freitas soared to new heights in the past year. His third studio album Elevate has promptly lived up to its name, propelling the singer to higher levels of recognition with hit songs such as "Bo Tem Mel," "Simple Girl," and "Broken Heart," just to name a few. "The title Elevate has everything to do with where I wanted to take my music and my career, I wanted to elevate everything that I was doing. I changed my sound by working with other musical producers, I changed my style into a more mature look with the help of my project manager and stylist Gisel Lopes," Freitas expounded about his album in a recent interview. Reinventing himself seemed to have paid off.

The song "Bo Tem Mel" is nominated in this year's Cabo Verde Music Awards in three categories: song of the year, best video, and best CaboZouk/Cabo Love. With this song, Freitas never doubted that he had created something solid: "I knew that the song would be nominated in at least one category simply because the track is well accepted worldwide, and this time I knew CVMA would recognize that," said an optimistic Freitas. The 14-track CaboZouk flavored album infused with R&B and Hip Hop, featuring guest vocals from C4Pedro, Djodje, Anselmo Ralph, Eddy Parker and Crucial is nominated for best electronic album.
The four nominations further validate the increasing love and admiration the fans have expressed towards Freitas, who has clearly cultivated a secret formula to his longevity and success. "It's hard work, a lot dedication and forming the right team because you can't do it alone, you need a solid team," he assured, adding that: "the CVMA has been good for artists from Cabo Verde because we did not have an award show like this until now."
Freitas' enthusiasm is apparent and his continued desire to perfect his craft is what has led him here. "Making this album was a long process because I spent so much time searching for that new sound that I wanted to bring on this journey. Soon after my collaboration with Big Nelo (Ella e), I knew I had found the basis for this album. I started to work with his musical producer Gunza Djos on "Certeza" and "All Upon You" which were the first two songs that actually made it on the album. Prior to these tracks I had already recorded five songs, but those didn't make it. After this, I worked on a super fresh track, "Broken Heart" with my co-producer William Araujo and from that point on I just kept going."
Freitas promises his fans that this is just the beginning and that there is more great music to come. In the meantime, he is currently at work on the re-release of Elevate along with a soon-to-come DVD of his much buzzed about concert held last November in Lisbon's Coliseu dos Recreios. Fans can expect to see him perform at music festivals this year, he assures. "I'm super excited because that's what I love to do, performing live for my fans. In addition, I have already started working on my next album, which is set for 2015."
With a finessed melody interwoven with a harmonious tone, his music will undoubtedly appeal to his listeners, sending them on a journey with a spark of fantasy. Whatever the reasons, interest in the music of Nelson Freitas has peaked and his sounds are guaranteed to have one hooked.
