Demarkus Lewis - Slower Than Lite (2016)

Known for his ability to take things to a deeper level while maintaining the energy that keeps the dance floors moving, Demarkus Lewis has grown to be one of the most diverse dance artists in underground house music today. From tech-house bombs on labels such as Nervous Records, soulful nuggets on Kingstreet Soundz, hypnotizing afro rhythms on Slip n Slide, body-jackin grooves on Guesthouse, deep and raw deliciousness on Lost My Dog, and everything in-between on his own Grin Music/Grin Traxx/Grin & Bass imprints, time and time again Demarkus has exhibited his staying power. He has firmly secured his place in dance musics foundation for future generations, and remains in-demand by both new and old school dance music lovers worldwide.

Zomby - Ultra (2016)

The album does have some high moments, such as his seven-minute collaboration with Burial, which without a doubt is destined to be championed as his strongest track on the album. For the first significant time throughout the entire project, Sweetz feels as though Zomby gracefully creates an intriguing soundscape as visual as it is curious, full of interesting vocal samples, vinyl crackles, and an unfolding drama that makes the longest track on the album the most cohesive. Many of the tracks begin in exciting and familiar territory, such as the introductory Reflection or the glitched vocal relief on Fly 2″. While tracks such as E.S.P., I, and YETI are reminiscent of the grimey landscape the UK birthed, each appear to be missing the breaks or drops that would have fans celebrating this project without question. These also make for the more tolerable of his mainly instrumental project, and remind us of the Zomby we are now finding ourselves nostalgic for.

Plaid - The Digging Remedy (2016)

Two years on from the release of Plaids Reachy Prints, the UK IDM duo have announced their next full-length release. Titled The Digging Remedy, the album is timed to arrive June 10 through Warp. The album features 12 new tracks from the long-running partnership of Ed Handley and Andy Turner, with a press releasing noting the pair continue to offer rhythmic variation, emotive melody and textures to electronic music. While Detroit house music informs pieces like CLOCK, The Digging Remedy is said to be bigger and broader in scope. Plaid have launched a new interactive site at which listeners can unlock The Digging Remedy's CLOCK. A puzzle-style system offers up snippets of the track, as well as downloads for snare patches and more.

Phoria - Volition (2016)

A voice appears out of a sound: a golden shape, a texture, a mixture of sunlight and sculpture. Music as spectral as this makes you lose yourself in the right way; deep in sound and light. Imagine the music of Sigur Ros, or James Blake, or Aphex Twin, but travelling somewhere else instead. As you do, pay attention as your eyes and ears adjust: open up, come alive. Over the past few years, Phoria have become known for their colourful, visually evocative soundscapes with the release of two EPs: 2013s Bloodworks and 2014s Display. Top 5s on Hype Machine, support from BBC Radio 1 and 6 Music followed along with millions of Spotify streams. Now, theyre proud to announce their highly anticipated debut album Volition, out 3rd June on X Novo Records.

Xenia Rubinos - Black Terry Cat (2016)

Xenia Rubinos arrives without exaggerated hype, but with the kind of artistic vision that sneaks up on you. Her first release came to me from within a big stack of CDs I'd picked up at a Latin Alternative music gathering in New York, and it was clear to me from the first listen that Rubinos heard things differently. Her choice of instruments, sound structure and lyrics all pointed to an artist who, if not fully developed, stood out from the crowd.

VA - Selectors 001: Motor City Drum Ensemble (2016)

Dekmantel's new Selectors compilation series and festival was apparently designed to celebrate those DJs who not only know how to work a dancefloor, but also dig deep for inspiration. First to showcase his dusty-fingered credentials is Danilo 'MCDE' Plessow, who's used the opportunity to gather together some of his favourite, hard-to-find house, disco and jazz-funk cuts. There's naturally much to admire, from the breezy soulfulness of Dj Slym Fas's 1997 gem "Luv Music" and Risque III's early Chicago deep house killer "Essence Of A Dream", to the ludicrously expensive jazz-funk-meets-disco-boogie brilliance of Licky's 1979 obscurity "African Rock". It's a cliche to describe a compilation as containing "all killers" and "no fillers", but in this instance it's an accurate assessment.

Moderat - III [Deluxe Edition]

Intent on creating something that contrasted their own individual projects, Moderat the trio comprised of Gernot Bronsert, Sebastian Szary (aka Modeselektor) and Sascha Ring (aka Apparat) complete the trilogy with III. III pairs an emotional pull with sensual imagery, creating dynamic sound and depth with sophisticated lyrics and themes as they direct their gaze inward. Apparat gives an insight on the journey we call life, Modeselektor reach another level, develop an intoxicating energy with their distinct rhythmical textures. One of the best parts of Moderat is their use of electronics to achieve orchestral diversity. With III, they update the songwriting tradition with an intriguing palette, born of careful attention and skill, informed by their experiences with sounds of nearly 25 years of sub-and-club culture. These three were initially brought together by Berlins now legendary rave scene and with this as their common foundation as individuals, III signifies Moderats maturation in modern pop and mastery of the group. Moderats III is out April 1, 2016 on Monkeytown Records

Fatima Al Qadiri - Brute (2016)

After releasing an album with her underground supergroup Future Brown last year, the New York-based, Kuwait-bred musician will return as a solo artist for Brute, a follow-up to her sinogrime-inspired 2014 debut album Asiatisch. Brute explores themes of authority and the relationship between police, citizens and protest worldwide, particularly of her adopted home in the United States, according to the label; concerns made visible in the albums cover art, which depicts the Josh Kline sculpture Po-Po heavily altered by art director Babak Radboy. The album teeters between rage and despair, heard through restrained percussion, sampled and processed recordings of urban protest, and [Al Qadiris] signature minor progressions, the label adds.

Lontalius - I'll Forget 17 (2016)

Eddie Johnston has been releasing music since the age of 13, but started to turn heads in the last year and a half with his gorgeous Casio covers of Top 40 songs from Nicki Minaj (Pills N Potions), Beyonce (a gently crooned XO), Ciara (Body Party), Drake, Bieber, Pharrell (a mopey Happy) and others. Approaching the end of his teenaged years, a now 18-year-old Eddie began to create and share his own original compositions. Initially heavy on lo-fi presentation and shoegaze style aesthetics, Eddies emotionally resonant songs steeped in youth, confusion and sadness have become cleaner, richly melodic, and lyrically focused.
